Why did Pratap Bhanu Mehta and Andre Beteille resign from the national knowledge commission? Any way, the stand that it keeps taking about education for the masses - the commission itself should not exist. Beteille, earlier had taken a stand that caste system in India should not be comapred to race discrimination when Dubin meeting was goingon. They have apparently resigned because the govt is not concerned about the issue of reservation, it seems! Good riddance of bad rubbish as far as I am concerned. congrats to Jayati Ghosh and P.M. Bhargava for taking a courageous stand on reservations.

this presents a new opportunity for the anti-reservationists to paint this division as between those 'who know' and those 'who are unaware of basic facts (ghosh, arjun singh etc.,)'.. pratap bhanu mehta has already gone on television with his biased views, and in the coming week there'd be more mediapersons trying to interview him and publicize his views than you can imagine. it's going to be tough.

I understand your anguish regarding the anti-reservation protests and all that. but I think you need to refrain from calling educated scholars as "rubbish" as it reflects on you rather that on them.
If you read more about the stands that Pratap Bhanu Mehta and PM Bhargava have taken you'll realize that barring certain issues they are speaking the same language.
The difference is mainly in the position that Mr. Bhargava feels that reservation needs to be introduced first for some years during which we need to build a unified, caste-independent system at primary educational level. Once that is done we don't need reservations.
Mr Pratap Bhanu Mehta on the contrary feels that we don't need to bring in the reservations as a stop gap at all because while it will improve representation ratios for various backward classes, it will also lead to greater feeling of discontent and hence discrimination among the other castes.
Now you may debate on the merits and demerits of each approach, but please do not insult them personally.

dear siddhesh, what makes you think academicians are unattackable? their biases are shown in the "academic" stands they take. under such circumstances, there is only one way. be biased in favour of the just. then you fulful your duty as an intellectual/academic. otherwise, you become the mouthpiece of the powerful. (like most of our acedemicians are).
in the polarised atmosphere of reservation debate, i just don't see bhargava and mehta speaking the same language. sorry.
I guess this is the major problem in this entire debate; anti and pro reservationists are "attacking" each other.
I would suggest you read the series of letters written by Pratap Bhanu Mehta and Yogendra Yadav on rediff for two things; firstly for lessons on how to oppose people's viewpoint without attacking them personally and secondly, for a good view on what both sides of the coin are thinking. I personally don't think you can claim that Pratap Bhanu Mehta is acting as a politicians' mouthpiece; there is no politician involved here who is opposing reservations; they cannot afford to. Infact it is due to lack of political support on their stand that they have resigned.
Also, read Mr. Bhargav's interview on the same site. You will see what I mean by both sides on the NKC essentially meaning the same end. I have no doubt that Mr. Bhargav is a very brave and intelligent man to have held his opinion inspite of being in the minority; not many people have that capability.
I think you should give thought to serious informed debate rather than personal attacks. Politicians resort to personal attacks when they do not have valid points to counter their opposition.
